Custom Hardware & Software Development

At its core, Tuctronics is an electronics engineering firm. We can design hardware for almost anything, and we write the firmware, servers, web pages and phone apps that go with it. AgriNET is built on that work: custom hardware running our own code to control and monitor almost every sensor and actuator found in commercial agriculture.

What we build

Hardware

  • Custom printed circuit board (PCB) design
  • Prototypes to production runs in our in-house hardware shop
  • Solar-powered field hardware
  • Controllers for valves, pumps, VFDs and heaters

Firmware

  • PIC microcontroller firmware written in assembly language
  • Low-power code for battery and solar devices
  • Drivers for almost any sensor or actuator used in commercial ag

Telemetry

  • Experts in the Digi NB-IoT cellular module
  • Modbus, I2C, SDI-12 and analog sensor inputs
  • Readings delivered straight into a SQL database
  • Radio, cellular and satellite links

Software

  • Servers set up and programmed for irrigation systems
  • Industrial control and monitoring of any kind
  • Web pages and dashboards
  • Phone apps for Android and iPhone

Custom PCB design and manufacturing

We lay out our own circuit boards and build them in our hardware shop in Walla Walla, Washington, from a single prototype to orders of any quantity. Because we design the electronics ourselves, we can fit the board to the job rather than the job to an off-the-shelf part.

Solar telemetry for any sensor

Our solar-powered telemetry hardware is built around the Digi NB-IoT module. It reads Modbus, I2C, SDI-12 or analog sensors and sends every reading into a SQL database, where the AgriNET app, your own software or a custom dashboard can use it.

  • Soil moisture probes, weather sensors, flow meters, pressure transducers and tank levels
  • Runs for seasons on a small solar panel
  • Data you own, in a database you can query

See it at work in our Sentek soil moisture telemetry and weather stations.

Example: 3-valve latching solenoid controller with signature analysis

This controller runs three latching solenoid valves from a single board. A latching solenoid only needs a short pulse to open or close, which saves power on solar sites, but it gives no sign that it actually moved. So our firmware records the electrical signature of every pulse and checks it, confirming that the valve really actuated.

The signature also changes with the water pressure on the valve, so the same measurement senses line pressure without a separate pressure sensor.

The controller logging a latching valve as it opens at different water pressures. Each curve has a different shape, which is how the signature confirms the valve moved and senses the pressure on it.
